Basically the fgdc metadata definition is a disaster and it is very hard to
represent fgdc metadata in a database (impossible in a single well formed
relational table). Its roots are in SGML and there is very little
correlation between it and the relational databases we have become used to.

Many organizations have abandon the full fgdc definition and have derived
subsets they can deal with. Many of this alternatives are "hits" in the
search given above.

ISO and others are in the process of building a new metadata definition that
appears so far to be about as useful as the current definition. It is a very
complex problem and without a clean break from the past (and the current ISO
efforts) I doubt we will see a solution any time soon (measured in decades).
