Subject: GISList: Maptitude: aerials and shapefiles not in right location
Date:  02/27/2003 03:15:25 PM
From:  Elenz, Carla J MIARNG

For any maptitude users, and possibly those who have used ArcView as well.

Our agency uses ArcView, but I recently purchased Maptitude because it is so
much easier for digitizing. I intended to do on screen digitizing on top of
new aerial photos we had flown, but have run into a problem.

I have two separate areas (call them A and B) in the state which I work on.
I have new aerials in both tif files and Mr. SId format for both areas. I
want to open the aerial in Maptitude, bring in a shapefile (for example
roads), convert to standard geographic file, and modify and add lines as
needed so my roads line up on my aerials. When I display the aerials and
shapefiles in ArcView, they are "more or less" in the same area, just need
some fixing up. WHen I bring the aerial and shapefile into Maptitude, for
my area A, the tif files and the shapefile are on top of each other, as they
are in ArcView. However, the SID file is about 200 meters off from the
shapefile in maptitude, even though it lines up in ArcView. So I can live
with using the tif. I did my digitizing, exported to a shapefile, and
everything lined up perfectly in Arcview.

However, when I go to Area B, neither the tif or the Sid will line up with
the shapefile. THe tif files are the same for both areas A and B, created
by the same contractor at the same time. All aerials and shapefiles are
projected in the same projection and datum. The tif has a tfw file and the
sid has a .sdw file, all seem to be correct. I can change the .tfw or .sdw
files to "shift" the aerials, but it is not exactly 200 m, so I would have
to figure the exact distance in both x and y direction. I actually did
this, and things lined up better in maptitude, but no longer when I exported
back to ArcView. Besides, if they are in the same coordinate system I would
think they would display in the same place.

Any idea why the tifs line up for one area and not the other and neither
sids line up? The on-line caliper help techs put alot of time in this, but
they couldn't figure it out either.

Thanks for any help.

Carla
