Subject: RE: GISList: AutoCAD Map Help

You can also reproject using Map 6. To do so, attach the images to a
drawing (dwgA) the the UTM coord system defined and save the drawing. Open
a new drawing and set the coordinate system to a local state plane system in
feet. Attach, as a source drawing, the first drawing you created (DwgA).
Now when you query in for draw, all of the images, they will automatically
be reprojected. You can draw you vectors now and when you want to convert
them to meters, simply save back to the source drawing you set up as UTM
(DwgA) and presto, the vectors will be converted to meters that match the
source coordinate system.

Hope this helps,

-Karen

Richard

A real simple approach is to draw the objects in feet and convert the whole
drawing to meters and overlay onto your aerial.

If that doesn't work for you and you need to draw directly over the aerial
in feet . . . make a copy of the aerial and covert it to feet . . . do your
drawing over the converted aerial and then convert the CAD drawing back to
meters and overlay onto you aerial in UTM meters.

This may not work for certain situations. I realize that this may produce
some distortion in the map.

Using a fixed point (lat/long or section corner, etc.) on each aerial that
ties the line work together usually will produce fairly good results.

You can also reproject the aerial from UTM meters into another Coordinate
System that reads in feet. "Imagine" software can handle this job quite
well.

I also use ArcView 8.3 and Map 6.

Hello List,
I have a CAD drawing that is in UTM, WGS 84, meters. Is there a way to keep
the drawing in this coordinate system but still draw in feet? We have an
image that is in UTM that we are extracting features from. So if I want to
draw a line 10 feet right now I have to convert it to meters. I know in
ArcGIS I can just set the display to feet and do this. We are using ArcGIS
and AutoCAD Map 6. We would do it in ArcGIS but the guys in the field are
only using AutoCAD Map. Thanks in advance.
