Original Q: I have a line shapefile of contour elevations. I have AV3.2 and spatial analyst but not 3D analyst. I have Surfer. I want to create a digital elevation model that can be displayed on the web. Can anyone offer advice on the best way to do this, given the tools I currently have to work with? I haven't figured out how to bring the shp file info into surfer to create the 3D image.
Solution: Some digging through the Surfer Support Forum archives led me to an ArcView script called "surfer extension 2.6" at http://arcscripts.esri.com/ (thanks Giancarlo Ciotoli for pointing that out)
You have to first convert the contour lines to a grid using ArcView Spatial Analyst. Then you "export data source" as ascii raster in ArcView. Use the surfer extension to then convert the ascii file to a surfer grid file.
Now I just have to read the surfer manual to see how to get the grid to look like it is supposed to :)
