Linux/Orcale would be good for your/your staff's resume. Once they get any
good they will most likely see jobs that are paying 50+% than you could ever
afford to pay. And you won't be able to replace them without paying the same
or starting over. If I had staffing reponsibilities I wouldn't touch an
Oracle environment with a ten foot pole unless I had very strong compelling
technical reasons and I had a very flexible, and large, budget for hiring
outside contract help.

Of course the same could be said for staff development on SQL Server but the
demand SQL Server DBA types is more mopderated, it doesn't take as much
talent to run a quality SQL Server shop, and the learning curve is much less
steep so replacement staff is not as much an issue.

Just my opinion having seen the train'em to leave scenario more than once.

Which is a technically better SQL DB is a VHS vs. BetaMAX issue IMO. Oracle
real shines where it is needed - but do you really need it?

Ditto for Linux with other issues regarding narrow support base (internal
and thrid party). In some cases it is the "best" solution.

One interesting issue I have noticed is that due to the mission of
university level CS programs the vast majority of the training is provided
on non-Microsoft environments. In many case Microsoft is bashed relentlessly
(unfairly IMO) by the faculty. This results in a dirth of CS graduates that
are literate in Micorsoft products, especially the technically complex ones
like Server OS and SQL Server. Luckily, if the graduates can overcome their
anti-microsoft conditioning, they can pick up the required knowledge
quickly.
