Hello. We have ArcSDE 8.2, Oracle 9i and RedHat Linux 7.3. Plus, we also have ArcIMS, all up and running. So far, there have been no real problems, even though the people setting up the ESRI products on our system have no real experience with SDE. I recently took the ESRI course, "ArcSDE administration for Oracle" and the instructor recommended this setup and has been running it himself (in current and former versions) for quite a while. He has also been very helpful in getting us set up and providing some support. I have found the ESRI support website (support.esri.com) to also be very helpful.
I would highly recommend taking the SDE course I mentioned above to the person that will be setting up the software on your machine. And if they do take the course, they should tell the instructor at the beginning of the class which operating system you are running.
