Subject: Re: GISList: Small City / County online GIS hosting
Date:  03/25/2003 12:10:01 PM
From:  Peter H. Van Demark

Mike:

>We are considering establishing a city / countywide GIS online database.
>Does anyone have any ballpark figures for hosting costs and links to hosts?
>Database setup and update can be done inhouse, but not the hosting. This
>will NOT be a large dataset, although TIFF DOQQ's could be added later.

You might be interested in an example web site we created at
(www.caliper.com/newton), to show how interactive maps can be used to find
a wealth of information about a city or town, organized by location. This
particular site reports information about Newton, MA.

Users can quickly switch between many different views of the same location.
The Points of Interest maps contain public and private points of interest
including parks, schools, churches, dining, lodging, and retail stores. The
Population maps contain block and block group level demographic data from
the 2000 Census, including age, race, income, and education. The Parcels
maps contain aerial photography, parcels, school districts, and voting
districts. The maps include school walking distance data that were computed
with TransCAD, a transportation planning software package, and topography
that was computed with Maptitude, a GIS mapping software package.

The web mapping application is powered by Maptitude for the Web. The data
have been assembled from a variety of sources, including the local Chamber
of Commerce. If you are interested, please contact us about web mapping
application development and hosting.
