Subject: RE: GISList: how to create a one-to-many numeric field
Date:  03/28/2003 11:35:00 AM
From:  Analisa Gunnell

Thanks to all of you who graciously attempted to answer my admittedly
confusing email, which posted the question of how to create a one-to-many
numeric field. While all of your answers were highly ingenuitive, I figured
out a way of resolving this problem (with the guidance of a team-mate), by
ditching Microsoft products, and relying on ArcView solely. I opened my
table in ArcView, and selected the name string field that needed a number
field associated with it. I then did a summarize, so I would have a new
table created with my string field being tallied with the quantity of each
being summarized in a new field. I then, created a new field called ID# in
my string table, and joined my new summarized table to my string table using
the name string field, as the join column. I finally calculated the new ID#
field to equal the FID field of the joined table. VOILA! I now have a
unique number associated with every name string on my map.
Thanks again for all your suggestions!

Analisa,
You can do this in EXCEL. First create a table with two columns
containing
your numeric values and the associated label. Now go back to your main
table
and create a new column for your numeric values. Move to the first cell and

use the LOOKUP command (see EXCEL help for correct format) to place the
correct
value in this cell. COPY this cell down the length of your column and EXCEL

will fill in the values.
