Subject: RE: GISList: how to create a one-to-many numeric field
Date:  03/28/2003 12:45:01 PM
From:  Analisa Gunnell

Hello GISList,

After a gentle wake-up call from a fellow lister, I am writing to apologize
for my inability to explain correctly just what I was attempting to do, and
in so doing, wrote a misleading question to the group. What I needed was a
number value associated with each name that I had in a string field. In
other words, I needed one specific number value (i.e. 1 thru 113) to be
linked to one specific name. So, yes, you are correct Mark that I simply
needed a one-to-one. I'm not sure why my mind registered this question as a
one-to-many...I think that I had confused myself for too long trying to work
out what I thought would be an easy table manipulation (as indeed it ended
up being). I apologize for using the terminology incorrectly, which
inadvertantly mislead all those who attempted to decipher my plea for
assistance. Thanks for calling out this embarassing slip of GIS terminolgy.

Humbly yours,

Analisa, I've never heard of a one to many numeric field before ? is what
you've now got really one to many or still simply - one to one - but now
you've got an additional numeric equivalent to each unique character string?
