Steve-
I had similar problems, even in 8.2. I have found that some templates
that contain a north arrow cause problems. My remedy to this is to
delete and reinsert a new north arrow. You have to open the template
directly for it to work.
Give it a try and see if that helps.

Hello,
We are having problems using templates in 8.3. Every time we load a
template ArcMap just closes without warning. I mean it closes faster
than when I really want to close it. Anybody encountered and found a
