Hi Listers,
Does anyone out there have experience in conducting variable width buffering using ArcView 3.x and/or ArcGIS 8.x? I have a project where I need to create some buffers from simple existing line segments. However, the resulting buffers require different widths from segment to segment. Additionally, the widths vary from segment to segment on the right and left sides of the arc respectively. It appears, these programs handle uniform width buffering well via the Buffer Wizards, however I don't see any tools for variable widths.
The only idea I can come up with is to create a bunch of different little buffers per segment, and then perform some clipping and appending (creating a lot more work). It also appears that the ESRI 3.x/8.x products also no longer offer the parameter selection of selecting 'Left' vs. 'Right' when buffering the segment: as ArcInfo Workstation does.
Here's an example of a single route (line):
Arc Segment/Buffer Distance Point A to Point B: 5 miles Point B to Point C: 4 miles Point C to Point D: 2.5 miles on Left & 4 miles on Right Point D to Point E: 3 miles Point E to Point F: 5 miles on Left & 2.5 miles on Right Point F to Point G: 4 miles
Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions anyone might have.
Travis
