Hi, I remember when i was working in ArcInfo 3.5 few years back, I used the variable width buffering. i had added the road width as 2m, 3m, 4m etc as I got from the field in the AAT table. Then i created the buffer with the buffer item as the item name of the road width. I got nice buffer of road centerlines. I could easily show the road with different widths. There was no need for creating buffer separately and joining, clipping etc., But then thereafter I have not created variable buffers in 8.x and all.
I understand the same options of variable buffering is available in the arcinfo workstation also
