Hello. My name is Stephen Brown. I'm a recent subscriber to this list.
I am writing to ask if anyone could help me find information on where I can find technical training in the GIS industry. My main fields of interest are Cartography, GIS Computer Software, and Field Data Gathering activities: in short, I like maps for their own sake as a most practical device, and as an art form, in and of themselves.
Computer software for GIS (ArcView, Manifold, GeoMedia, etc.) also holds my interest and appeals to my creative side. Finally, doing the field work of walking or driving a road, woodlot, or mountainside appeals to me for the active, out-of-doors side of me and lets me participate in the actual real-time gathering of pertinent geographic data, whatever it may be.
I am interested in a more technically-oriented approach to learning, as traditional academic approaches have not worked for me thus far in my life. I desire a carefully-focused, "laid-back" type of educational and vocational approach, where the student is made to feel as if their success is of paramount importance to the instructor(s)--and is!
Both collegiate styles of instruction and more on-the-job type of approaches (both resulting in certifications) are acceptable. I'm looking for names of schools that are, essentially, technical colleges that focus more on the doings of the pertinent job, rather than the more traditional Liberal Arts college curriculum, as I do not learn well from that style of instruction. The combination of on-the-job or like-the-job training at a technical college would benefit me greatly, as well as any private-company that may offer such endeavoring.
Finally, I have Attention Deficit Disorder--to me, a mild learning disability--which mostly affects my mathematics, and some organizatinal and planning abilities. It is by no means debilitating, but can be a bit of a problem towards the middle of a semester, when I suffer from "information overload" and usually end up having to cut back my class load or stop classes all together. Thus the desire for a more hands-on approach.
I am eager to participate in what is, to me, and exciting industry. I owe the new recreational sport of Geocaching (www.geoaching.com/faq.asp) for getting me interested in GIS, and I have also been a map and compass nut for years.
Thank you in advance for any help. I am best reached at the following two email addresses and this list:

Send to both for best results.
Again, I thank you.
Respectfully, Stephen A. Brown Traverse City, Michigan
