there's quite a few good GNU apps there. i can't comment much further on
any of them, as having MapInfo 7.0 i don't have much reason to try too many,
but most of them will take some setting up and have a bit of a learning
curve to them.

I have been searching the web for GIS freeware that would offer GIS novice's
the ability to view and edit (at least a little) basic GIS data formats,
such as shapefile's and coverage's. I just thought that I should look into
the wisdom and expertise of the group, before I continue downloading tons of
.exe files to my desktop. Thanks so much in advance.
