Subject: Re: GISList: request for information

Well, the answer to this question is mostly a matter
of how you intend to use your GIS. Without knowing
that, I think Smallworld is the most powerful GIS
available today. It's object model is the most robust
and it has very scaleable database management
capabilities. The downside to it is that it is,
frankly, a pain in the ass to learn. There is a steep
learning curve. And its Magik programming language is
proprietary. I wish it happen an open architecture.
Also, cartographically it is limited. I've never seen
a geography lab that can get away with just using
Smallworld. You'll still need an ESRI product, or
equivalent, to make your maps, and FME to move
everything between them.
