Subject: Re: GISList: seeking recommendations for GPS receivers
Date:  05/15/2003 10:25:01 AM
From:  Robert Heitzman

Carefully consider you needs for accuracy. For many tasks 10 feet is fine
and the WAAS enabled GPS devices can deliver this for well under $200. Once
you get below recreational WAAS accuracy you costs will go way up - initial
purchase, skills needed, and time it takes to obtain data.

I use a GPS for road centerline surveys for which a moving WAAS GPS that can
consistantly achieve 20' is adequite. Waypoints are typically recorded with
<10' estimated error and only take 30 seconds or less averaging time. I use
the Garmin GPS 76 - $175 street price. The 76 supports an external antenna,
if you don't need that the GPS 72 should be considered.

Check out http://www.gpstm.com (GPS TrackMaker) for your data management
software. The freeware is very useful and the Pro version may have features
you like for only $49.

There are many options for moving map. I use http://www.manifold.net 5.5
works great and is a full featured GIS to boot. A single license can be used
on a desktop and your laptop. They have a great academic license - buy one
and the rest are free for the school!!! The big dog GIS bigots will schoff
at you so be prepared.

Some GPS devices support simple topo maps, they cost a bit more, but if they
meet your needs for moving map the system cost and ease of use may be
attractive.

There are some no display GPS devices that are meant to be used only with
laptops/PDAs. Just a black box and a cable.

You might want to post the tasks you need to perform as the response may
help you get better reponses for your particular case.
