Subject: RE: GISList: Software and satellite comparison
Date:  06/12/2003 07:20:01 AM
From:  GIS (IPS)

Yes, strangely enough I also get a message telling me my mail's been
rejected.

Back to the subject. I have made mention of the fact that it's now more of
open market and it's also quite viable to not even purchase a GIS package
off the shelf as it's possible to have a Database (SQL, Oracle, etc.) run in
the background with a spatial "interface". We have developed products like
that, but it's very specific to industries or comapnaies even as you don't
leave a lot space for operation outside of the intended use. To me it's
also important to give the client more choice and indicate to them that
there are commercial packages available and for them then to compare these
packages to that which can be developed for a more specific need.

Ciao

Subject: Re: GISList: Software and satellite comparison

Hello Craig, Dean & All GeoCyberSpace,

First, I'm sorry about not sending this mail to the GIS List,
I alaways receive a refuse delivery,,, I don't know Why ????

Regarding what Dean asked for,
I wanted to declare something :
The GIS industry is starting a matured stage,
in the near past, GIS vendors controlled to a limit
the industry standards, and GIS customers faced hesseles
in their projects.

This was the main reason why it was hard desicion to select
GIS software.

Today, the situation is different, we're talking about the "Open Solution",
GIS is integrating with legacy other systems/Databases,
We can find now in the same site, different GIS seats from different
vendors,
and this is good.

Almost all products speak the same language: Object Oriented,
ORDBMS, projections, spatial conversion, ...

I just want to mention that GIS experts should focus on the project
success and customer satisfactory, instead of looping in an endless
comparaison between GIS softwares.
I think that there are other parameters influence the selection of the
GIS software:
1) the size of the project :
small city system is different than huge telecom network
2) the buget :
there are now budgetry solutions, although less powerfull,
but do the job to a limit
3) the expertise availability:
it's not wise to work in an environment where few can have hands on.
