Subject: RE: GISList: Convert degrees to decimal degrees
Date:  06/17/2003 09:15:00 AM
From:  William Howell

How long is long? More than 64,000 rows? If not and you have excel, it
wouldn't be too hard to convert them using left() and mid() to separate
degrees, minutes and seconds.

Here is a sample for 3 digit degrees:
=3DLEFT(RC[-1],3)+MID(RC[-1],5,2)/60+(MID(RC[-1],8,2)/3600)
ie 134o55'35'' becomes 134.9263889

and for 2 digit degrees
=3DLEFT(RC[-1],2)+MID(RC[-1],4,2)/60+(MID(RC[-1],7,2)/3600)
45o20'15'' becomes 45.3375

Just insert the new decimal degree column to the right of the original
for both lat and lon. As long as you don't have 2 and 3 digit degree
longitudes, you can simply apply that formula to the whole column. If
not, sort the longitude column by using Data-> Sort and apply the
appropriate formula to each section.

If you don't have excel, similar functions can be done in other
spreadsheet or db programs.

Subject: GISList: Convert degrees to decimal degrees

Hi all.
I have a very long column with coordinates in degrees, minutes and
seconds.=20
Is it possible to convert them by some easy way automaticaly to decimal=20
degrees, not having to convert each coordinate pair by itself - I will
loose=20
too much time if so.
I will appreciate your solutions very much.

Thank you in advance,
