Subject: Re: GISList: Publishing Grids on the web
Date:  06/23/2003 09:55:00 AM
From:  Peter Baumann

[ Apologies for the late take-up of this thread, I was on vacation for a week
:-) ]

Victor-

A way to offer grids (=rasters) via Web is provided by rasdaman
(http://www.rasdaman.com). Just drop your georeferenced raster data into the
rasdaman server: it will store all in a standard relational database (such as
Oracle, IBM DB2, IBM Informix), and it will give your pretty fast, pretty
flexible access via a range of clients or simply a Web browser (PC or PDA).

* fast:
<boast>We like to think of "fast" as, e.g., sub-halfsecond access to any
location / any zoom factor running multi-Terabyte grid databases on a standard
PC server.</boast>

* flexible:
For DEMs, you possibly want to do dynamic coloring, combinations with other
layers, and some sort of analysis on all that. For a mining company we extracted
the difference between two DEMs of the same area on the fly, highlighting and
thresholding changes. See also GeoConnexion's article @
http://www.geoconnexion.com/magazine/article.asp?ID=804 .

Well, why use a _database_? Just in brief, some arguments pro databases (and con
files) are functionality, flexibility, data integrity, scalability, vast tool
support of database vendors, easier server maintenance.

Regards,
Peter
