Subject: GISList: Spatial or coordinated area of interest
Date:  06/30/2003 05:30:01 AM
From:  Mohammad Ishfaq

Hi all,
I am using VB and ArcObjects to create a customized client solution where on default load event of project user is presented with a login dialog. On successful login process data only relevant to the logon person is displayed in the ArcMap document.

I think of four different solutions to this problem. First solution is to create multiple projects and then each user opens only project relevant to him. This is not a real solution as the number of users may be very high.

The second solution is to load all the data in to ArcMap document and then clip all the remaining layers according to user specified area of interest. Finally, this clip data is posted in a new ArcMap document. This also is not a very ideal solution because it involves too much processing.

Thirdly it is a question for me and all of you, will I need to work on any spatial-enabled databases like Oracle to accomplish such a task?

And finally is there any other solution like making some sort of spatial query from a geodatabase etc. Though, I don't have much of idea about this solution.

So to summarize my question, can any body guide me if there is any way we can make a spatial query to load user-specific data-screen on application load up? Your input will be highly appreciated.

I am currently running ArcObjects 8.2 / ArcMap 8.2 on Win2k platform.

I will sum up at the end.
Thanks in advance.
