Original Q: I have been told I will be receiving a number of files in GPL = format. These are GPS coordinates of field boundaries. I do not know what = GPS unit was used to collect the data, but I do know the company uses Farm = Works as their GIS software. I need to create shapefiles from them, but I h= ave never heard of this format before. Any suggestions on what I will be up= against?
Answer: GPL is apparently Delorme Mapping's private format. To use the file= s in ArcView meant opening them in Excel, stripping off header and footer i= nfo, putting in column headings (X,Y) and deleting a number of columns, sav= ing as text and opening in AV3.2 as an event theme. Some files had multipl= e polygons (separate farm fileds) which had to be each saved in a separate = text file. Then I used XTools to convert the points to polygons. Rather ted= ious.=20
I had generous offers from list members to convert the files to shapefiles = using Manifold or Farm Works Site Mate (thanks - I may take you up on that = yet) but so far I have only received a few "test files" and am waiting to s= ee what the whole lot will be like. I have requested that the sender conver= t the rest to shapefiles before sending but I'm not holding my breath.
The GPL format is a fairly simple ascii text format - just not friendly to = ArcView.
Thanks for all your help - this list continues to amaze me.
