Dimitri, Viktoras...ET Al,
Can someone explain to me what this has to do with GIS ?
This constant bickering does not seem constructive to me.
just my 2 cents... -Kevin

Viktoras,
Since most of your tips involve old problems that have long been fixed and are only an issue if the user failed to update his or her system as recommended by Microsoft, it might be wise to consolidate them into a single tip that requires less mental effort to apply:
"Make sure you turn on Windows Update, and also take advantage of Microsoft's automatic notification of security updates."
This is a great service because you can be sure your system is at all times up to date and protected against security exploits that appear. It is really nice to take advantage of the vast sums Microsoft spends to identify problems and to rapidly and automatically dispatch hotfixes to users.
By the way, is there such a free service in Linux? I've looked around, and I can't find any organization that is spending a hundred million dollars a year to identify all known threats against Linux as they emerge, to create hotfixes, and to automatically send binary patches in an easy-to-install way to all Linux users.
I have been tempted to set up Linux on one of my old machines to relive the glory days of my UNIX youth, but somehow I have become accustomed to Windows Update and the free security notifications from Microsoft and I don't know how to get the same service in Linux. Any tips? Do any of the commercial Linux distributions offer such a service?
Cheers,
Dimitri
