Subject: GISList: SUM: DATA: Socioeconomic info for Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Rwanda (crosspost)
Date:  07/07/2003 01:20:00 AM
From:  Craig Von Hagen

Thanks to those who responded, some very useful links were found.

Original question:
I am looking for population and/or any other socio-economic data for the
above countries.
I have tried searching the FAO-UN GeoNetwork and the Geography Network but I
was wondering if there were any other sources I could try.

Answers
For population you should look at the CIESIN site:
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/plue/

Also check out ORNL's LandScan data:
http://www.ornl.gov/gist/landscan/index.html

FAO was involved in a Global Farming Systems study that looked at
population and poverty which may be of interest to you - it is available at
http://www.fao.org/farmingsystems/

also look at FAOSTAT http://apps.fao.org/

Try: http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

Atlas from 'Le Monde diplomatique' with a lot of facts
concerning the situation of the world.
You can find 'Le Monde diplomatique' in different languages by means of
internet. If you choose
http://www.mondediplo.com/ you will see the english one with the
possibility to see some maps (of
course in a graphical format) for Africa as well.
Maybe you can contact them to receive some information or perhaps they
can tell you other
sources.

The GLOBAL GAZETTEER: the world on file
http://www.allm-geodata.com

You might also try the UN Economic Commission for
Africa in Addis Ababa - they are a regional repository
for official government figures, at least...
