Subject: FW: GISList: Symbology
Date:  07/31/2003 12:20:01 PM
From:  Analisa Gunnell

Thank you for posting this question. I have also wanted to know if there w=
as a way, but didn't have the time to look into it. Here is a suggestion f=
rom the ESRI user forum that seems very smart (although a little too many s=
teps for my liking... but I'm a simpleton)

"Hi ESRI-L List=20
Thank you Tom DeWitte!!!=20

I used Tom s suggestion an added a column containing the names of the=20
symbols.=20

Original Question:=20
Does anybody know how to save symbology in a geodatabase outside of a=20
layer?=20

Tom's Answer:=20
In ArcMap 8 you can call symbols by name. That is you can have a=20
column in your feature classes attribute table that contains the name=20
of the symbol that you wish the record to use. Then in ArcMap in the=20
properties of the layer choose the symbology tab. Under the=20
"categories" show option, choose "match to symbols in a style". This=20
will allow you to specify a style and the name of the column=20
containing the names of the symbols to use.=20

This will allow you to save your symbology in the geodatabase."=20

Cheers!

Subject: GISList: Symbology

I am looking for a way to have symbology for a GDB feature class be
permanently set so that every time it is added to a ArcMap Project it
automatically has the correct symbology. If this is not possible, I
would like to find a easier way to set the symbology then importing a
layer file every time. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
