Hi,
Yes FME is a great product. You should also look into Geography Markup Language (GML) the emerging world standard for encoding geographic information and potentially the final solution to this data interconversion issue. Most GI vendors have started to adopted GML (including ESRI) and once that takes hold we can finally see an end to this endless round of data converions. Of course this will not solve any one's short term data conversion issues. You can use FME to convert to and from GML by the way ..
GML clearly distinguishes presentation from content - GML is focused on content but through the SLD specification and GML default style provides means of associating GML geography with SVG and other expressions of graphical presentation. In this way presentation can not only be extended to other graphical formats but also to text and audilble presentation forms as well.
Cheers
Ron
