Ayo,
Using OGC interfaces you can do what you want, below are some resources to
get you started.
1. a popular map server: http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/
2. example lightweight client for browsers:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/inlinewms
3. the WMS cookbook to explain Web Map Server interfaces:
http://www.intl-interfaces.com/cookbook/WMS/ (note that this is different
from the OGC draft version of the WMS Cookbook, in that the International
Interfaces document deals with OGC interfaces in a direct manner instead of
primarily being an install guide for OGC adapters for commercial software)
4. data served through OGC interfaces from USGS (see map services tab):
http://gisdata.usgs.net/
5. an online registry of other web map servers and web feature servers that
serve data through OGC interfaces: http://www.AskTheSpider.com/

Hi List,
I am working on a project that requires me to perform
the following functions on an existing set of vector
data.
1. Cartography to show different street types with
colours, street names, Place names, buildings of
interest, Highways, Major & Minor Roads,
Built up Area,
2. Write the output of 1. above to one or more
geotiff/geojpeg due to area data covers (45Km by 75Km
mapped at 1:5000)
3. Locate software that can be used to
(a) View the raster file generated in 2 above
(b) Load a point file with shop locations and shop
pictures, perform street searches and or shop location
searches, and print.
What I need is 2 applications. One to perform 1. and
2.above, and another (lite GIS data viewer) to perform
3.
I have been searching the internet for options and
have come up short.
