Subject: RE: GISList: Cartography and Data Viewer
Date:  08/25/2003 04:40:01 PM
From:  Sonny Parafina

Hey Dimitri! Punk'd!

Heh.

All joking aside, Dimitri's suggestion is fine for one-off applications or
maps.

However, if you feel that setting up the same data that everyone has set up
a million times over and over again is a waste of time then look into OGC
interfaces. For example the USGS is the data producer and steward of many
spatial data products, however instead of distributing only files, the data
is distributed through a web service that only provides the current data you
want when you want it. This saves you the time of searching, downloading,
unzipping, converting, formatting, projecting, loading, serving up the data,
and maintaining it. The flab in desktop gis is the 80% of your budget spent
on processing the same data that other organizations have already done.

If you do just need a desktop app, ArcExplorer does have an extension for
OGC interfaces. An ArcView-like alternative with OGC extensions is Jump
from www.vividsolutions.com

Cheers,

sonny

Wow! What a lot of endless OGC flab, just to get started on such a simple
task. Here's a better idea:

a) Use ArcExplorer - this is a free ESRI viewer that works fine with
shapefiles.
b) Keep your data in shapefiles. It's hard to find a GIS application or
freeware viewer that can't handle shapefiles.

Cheers,

Dimitri

PS: Of course if for some reason you have an emotional need to undertake an
expensive software development project using thuddingly slow and inefficient
technology, than for sure OGC is the way to go....
