Subject: RE: [gislist] GIS Data Licensing
Date:  08/27/2003 01:50:01 PM
From:  Lega, Robert

Hello Mary & list,

Many topics surface when it come to licensing data:

1)Setup VARs, Value Added Resellers
2)Taxes inside/outside of the state of sale/to the state of sale
3)How to police
4)Leasing the data
5)How to price, license based/copy based

These are just a few issues that are worth discussing, but there are and =
will be many more on a case by case basis.

Hope these topics can get you started...good luck

RSL

Subject: [gislist] GIS Data Licensing

Hi List-

Since this has been a big week for discussion...I thought I'd change the =

topic and wait for the fireworks. I understand it's not generally=20
acceptable for a public agency to sell data...but that's not my =
question.

Our City is researching how to sell/distribute our GIS data to data=20
resellers. Currently, our GIS data license agreement prohibits someone =
from=20
acquiring our data and redistributing or selling it to others. The City=20
Attorney would like to see the City collect an annual royalty fee based =
on=20
the resell of our GIS products. Has this topic been addressed or =
considered=20
by anyone else on the list?

I appreciate your help.

Mary Lackner
