Subject: Re: [gislist] Cartography Question for Discussion
Date:  08/29/2003 03:45:01 PM
From:  JONATHAN BYRON

Here are three quick suggestions - not a comprehensive list, but a good =
start. Mark Monmonier's cartography books are good, and he has contributed =
a great deal to cartography via journal publications - "How to Lie with =
Maps" is a popular book by Monmonier. Borden Dent's textbook was used in a =
class I took, and I learned a good deal from it. Edward Tuft has several =
excellent books on graphic communication. =20

>>> "Weaver, Christopher" <CWeaver@icfconsulting.com> 08/29/03 12:34PM >>>
So I've been tossing this around in my mind for awhile - Databases, =
Programming and "GIS Heavy Lifting" aside...

So how does one fine tune his or her skills in Cartography?
... or what makes a good cartographer

Does one take classes in Color Theory at the local art school?
Books to be read?
Stare at the "old masters" work for awhile?
etc?

I.e. For myself... I have a Bachelors, and a Masters in Geography. =
Several years of industry experience plus freelance while in college. =
Member of several mailing list that deal with the topic. Read as much as =
I have time for. Have the latest in GIS software on my workstation in my =
office. Apprenticeship isn't an option. I consider myself a pretty =
competent Cartographer already, How would I take my skills to the next =
level?

So, if you think you are an excellent cartographer, how did you get that =
way?

Will sum...

Chris
