Subject: [gislist] iPAQ + ArcPad advice
Date:  09/05/2003 06:50:01 AM
From:  RICK GRAY

Hello listers.

I have talked my boss into allowing me to purchase a half dozen Compaq
iPAQ units with GPS flash cards for my GIS course. The college enjoys a
site license for ArcPad. We got a great deal on the units from a local
supplier (Halltech Environmental Inc in Guelph, Ontario) by purchasing
some older demo units along with the new. Specifically we are getting
iPAQ models 3650, 3850 and 3950.

I've been checking out web sites on the tools but was wondering if
anyone on the list has classroom-type experience. I personally have
never used ANY of these before - hardware or software. How easy is the
transition between ArcPad and ArcView 3.x? How limited is ArcPad's GIS
abilities? What kind of data storage capacity will these units have
(i.e. - what kind of restrictions will I have to consider when loading
background layers)?

I plan to have the students go into the field for an afternoon and map
some trails and features. This course is a brief intro to GIS and an
even briefer intro to GPS.

Any suggestions or precautions gratefully received.

Thanks
