Subject: [gislist] Garmin GPS/PDA
Date:  09/30/2003 09:10:02 AM
From:  Anthony Quartararo

Just had a preview of the latest gadget: the full Palm OS/with Garmin =
GPS
integrated. I was very impressed with the initial product potential, =
and
for ~ $550, it seems reasonable. However, on further analysis, there =
are a
few things that present larger obstacles to using this:

A) batter life with GPS in use is ~ 2 hours. Ugh !=20
B) GIS data layers/maps are of course, required to be in a proprietary
format
C) conversion of user provider map data or attribution seemed to be more
involved that it needed to be

What was suspected, but not proven, but previous attempts at GPS/PDA
combinations proved that the accuracy of the integrated GPS was not on =
par
with a stand-alone GPS unit. I've heard also that there is some =
shareware
or freeware that allows ESRI data to be used in a Palm OS, and was =
wondering
if anyone had a lead on this ? Lastly, a general comment, that it would =
be
more user friendly if the GPS OEMs would stick to making GPS units and =
not
promote yet more mapping applications that have proprietary formats that
require conversion, licensing, updates, maintenance and
integration/configuration with a multitude of
OS/hardware/network/database/GIS platforms. It encumbers the user,
needlessly, IMHO.

Best Regards,

Anthony Quartararo
