Subject: Re: [gislist] Garmin GPS/PDA

> A) batter life with GPS in use is ~ 2 hours. Ugh !
That is the shortest I've ever heard of, but one can always carry more
batteries. On the other hand, when the battery life is drawing short does
this greatly affect the operation of the unit? If so, I would consider that
a major flaw that would figure greatly in my decision to purchase one or
recommend one to someone else.

> B) GIS data layers/maps are of course, required to be in a proprietary
> format
How easy is it to convert this proprietary format to say .shp files?

C) map data or attribution seemed to be more
> involved that it needed to be
This is the first unit I've heard of that will allow attribution of map data
that sells for $550. Can you create a data dictionary? How limited is the
data tree? can you break down your feature attribution more than just
feature names and a few attributes?
Will the unit's software allow one to differentially correct the data?
finally regarding your comment about the OEM's tendency to the proprietary
formats, I agree wholeheartedly, but it seems a typical progression of most
manufacturers in the GIS arena. Give it another couple of years (maybe
more:)) and someone will have a unit that attributes data, proprietary or
not, and allows one to DGPS for around the same price. IOW, we're getting
there...we've come a long way from in the last 8 years:)
