Be sure not to use alkalines to run high tech gadgets like GPS handhelds, palm pilots, digital cameras, etc. My understanding is that the way alkalines discharge their power they fail to deliver enough to run these things even though they still have a lot of life in them (say for running a flashlight, etc). I recommend using NiMH (nickel metal hydride) batteries. Buy two or three sets of rechargeable NiMH batteries and make it a routine of rotating them through the charger. I've been able to meet my needs using three sets of rechargeables for several years now. It works well, saves money (and its good for the environment too).
