Rick,
The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection provides one of the best examples you will find of cutting edge Internet GIS technologies combined with compelling on-line geospatial content. From a user perspective, this public access site is completely vendor neutral and platform independent, requiring the user only to have a web browser (IE, Netscape, AOL) and a decent Internet connection. The site includes two browser-based GIS interfaces designed for the GIS novice as well as the GIS professional user. Both user interfaces include revolutionary tools for interactive on-line image/map comparison, analysis, and visualization: http://www.davidrumsey.com/gis. Another unique feature of this resource is the interactive Web 3D Viewer for selected historical maps (currently San Francisco, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite Valley, Lewis & Clark Expedition Route): http://www.davidrumsey.com/3D.htm.
Our Company (Telemorphic, Inc.) created these public access Internet GIS and Web 3D resources on behalf of the David Rumsey Collection. The site makes extensive use of commercially available off-the-shelf software (Maplicity, ArcIMS, ArcGIS, and Virtools) to provide a enhanced functionality, scalability, and value with a minimal investment of resources.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. Good luck with your GIS course, and keep up the good work!
Best regards,

I was wondering if anyone had some good links to GIS projects on the web that I could point my students to. These are first semester, non-GIS students taking a mandatory GIS course in a 2 year environmental management diploma program. I thought if they could see examples of some of the things going on out there, it might get them excited. They will have an integrated GPS/GIS project to do before the end of the semester using ArcView 3.3.
Thanks millions.
