public transport's another biggie in this arena. some time ago i was looking at trying to define a rough position using just GSM, but decided it was gonna take too much effort at this point in time considering GPS is likely to be standard in phones etc within a couple years.
a lot of the time spent on the phone with customers is trying to determine where they are, as people tend to explain their position poorly, and this would assist in this area very much.

Hi Jack,
I think this could be extremely commercial - given the growth of mobile phone user in the age group of 5 - 12 years. The obvious need to be address become tracking and monitoring in such cases, and a direct implication on the E911 serivces (which definitely is a generic offeirng of most LBS players). Apart this commercial angle, the model could well be extended to a B2B scenario. With the objective to track down and draw in floating customers - lot of retail outlets (food & beverage, accessaries, apparels etc) could be the immediate target for such services e.g. a regular customer of a Pizza joint is informed about the new combo package through an automated SMS on his mobile once he is couple of blocks away. Probably this kind of approach could further be customized based on the intelligence one has about the customer/consumer e.g. prefered ordering hours, take away vs dine ins, volume of order etc.
I am just trying to throw out some vague gauges for the question you have asked - but it becomes increasingly difficult for me to articulate what I want to point out here - which is basically something most of the LBS players have overlooked.
Let me know if you have specific questions pertaining to what have mentioned above - that will help me articulate my thoughts better.

Hi Guys,
A new design with both GSM and GPS module integrated at a size of say NOKIA 8250 cell phone, with features including pinpointing, SMS and two-way vocal communication, and can be utilized by women, kids and the aged for emergent services. Would you guys think it's commercially potential? If so, who in the LBS business could be interested in?
Your advice will be very helpful and highly appreciated.
Regards.
Jack
