Subject: [gislist] GIS Jobs in Mining/Oil/Etc Industries Outside USA: Advice for a Recent Graduate?
Date:  10/10/2003 03:50:01 PM
From:  Derek Link

Dear Geocomm list,

In two months, I complete a master's degree in
geography, with heavy coursework concentrations in
GIS, remote sensing, and spatial/geostatistical
analysis. I also studied quite a bit of geology,
because I find it interesting. This list has been
quite helpful to me over the years of my education.
So I thought I would give it another go.

I have landed my first GIS job, and I'm very happy
about that. And I intend to stay with that for some
time. But looking to the future, however, I am quite
interested in working outside of North America,
particularly in the natural resources industries. I
would love to work in the Middle East, even Iraq. Any
place really.

I have not been able to get a good handle on what
role, if any, people with my skills play in these
industries, and how to tap into the networks of job
seekers/employers. I am in New York City, and most of
the established connections with my university
department are with utilities, construction, telecoms,
or government type jobs in urban centers of the USA.

Frankly, I am young(ish) and unmarried. I want to
have some adventures, get my hands dirty, and travel
to remoter parts of the world before I have to settle
down. (I guess that's what makes us geographers in
the first place!) If you have any advice or thoughts
about how someone with my mix of skills can tap into
that type of work, I would love to hear about it. My
resume and more about my skills is on my academic
website:

Thanks very much for your insights.

Derek Link
