Hi everyone,
Just to say thanks for taking the time to help with the fill down problem. I was suggested a few ways of doing it, summed below...
1. Export as a .dbf to excel, fill there and re-import to ArcView after re-defining the data range or the new data won't be saved (Thanks to Duncan Payne, Eric Fevre, Noel Gonsalvez and Cristif(?))
2. Click edit table, then use the field calculator. If the field is numeric type rec+1 to begin sequential numbering from one. If the field is string type (rec+1).AsString (Thanks to Jeff Jenness, Jordan Chamberlin, Mike Breare, Pieter G. van den Beukel)
3. Others pointed me to(or sent me, thanks Vassil) various extensions that can do the job: table tools, the script AddRecord.ave(Thanks also to John Rowe, Layne Seely and Sotiris Koukoulas)
Regards,
Jane
