Subject: [gislist] SUM - image reprojection software
Date:  10/22/2003 11:55:00 AM
From:  northms .. telus.net

Hi all,

Original Question:
>Can anyone suggest software for reprojecting images? I'm looking for free-
>standing software, not something that's an add-on to an existing GIS
>package. And I want something that will reproject images already in some
>projection, not something for georegistering images. It should be able to
handle TIFF, GeoTIFF, and JPEG at the very least.
>I know of Blue Marble Geographic Transformer. Are there other packages
>available?

Summary/Options:

Thomas Gonzalez <tgonzalez@saws.org> suggested ERDAS' free ViewFinder.
http://gis.leica-geosystems.com/support/software/viewfinder_description.html I
tried this out, and it looks good. It has a number of common projections, but
no option for adding new ones. The input image projection must be defined in
advance (e.g., in the GeoTIFF header): this can be done with ArcCatalog, if the
TIFF is not write-protected. I couldn't find anything that explained what
datum transformation method is used. As a check, I plan to compare any raster
I reproject with a similar vector file reprojected in other software.

Dimitri Rotow <dar@manifold.net> suggested Manifold
(http://www.manifold.net). "It can handle many image formats and has beautiful
reprojection capabilities. At $245 it is less than Blue Marble and does far
more."

Blue Marble Geographic Transformer, which I mentioned, is available from
http://bluemarblegeo.com. Cost is US$799.

Thanks for the responses.
