Subject: [gislist] SDE 997 error
Date:  10/23/2003 12:40:01 PM
From:  Mitch Bergeson

I am trying to install SDE and Oracle on a Windows 2000 test machine and
keep getting the following error.

esri_sde service failed during initialization.
Please check event log or error log files.
Error starting esri_sde service(997)
Could not start ArcSDE - - Check Network, $SDEHOME disk, DBMS settings and
dbinit.sde.

I have checked all the path names in SDEHOME and Path and they are
correct. The service appears to be created properly. I have tried the
solutions on the ESRI discussion forum, but nothing seems to work.

The error logs read:

sde.errlog

Warning: Parameter "TEMP" not found in defaults file!
Warning: Setting TEMP to "C:WINNTTEMP"
init_DB DB_instance_open_as_dba: -51
DBMS error code: 12631
ORA-12631: Username retrieval failed

sde_userenv.log

Error connecting to Oracle:
ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve service name

I typically set up the service in command prompt but that has not worked.
I was able to get the service working on 2 separate occasions using the
SDE gui interface but when I restarted the machine sde would not start up
again and the 997 error would occur.

Any insights would be helpful.
