Subject: [gislist] data mgmt Q for ArcMap and ArcView
Date:  11/04/2003 02:55:01 PM
From:  Rich Finger

GIS Listers,

I'm looking for some input regarding data management.
I'm constantly seeing time wasted with trying to find
projects or trying to reset the data source paths
after files have been renamed or moved.

I'm particularly interested in whether a program
exists that could save project (in ArcView 3.x and
ArcMap 8.x) related information into a database. The
information I would like to see in the database would
be: 1) the name and location of the project (and
their paths), 2) names of all raster and vector files
included in project, and 3) a list of keywords
(manually entered) describing the project.

I envision this as a program that would run after
every time the project is saved. The database could
then be opened and a query could be performed which
would display things like all of the projects
currently using a specified shapefile. Then if the
shapefile were to be moved or renamed, the user could
locate all those projects and fix them. Or if a
project could not be found it could be located by
using the keywords.

Does something of this nature exist? Will summarize.
Thanks to all.
