Subject: [gislist] Seeking Opinions on Lizardtech's MrSID
Date:  11/05/2003 03:00:01 PM
From:  Leonard, Korine

Hello List!

Several months back, we were greatly disappointed to learn of =
Lizardtech's decision to move to a "data cartridge" pricing plan on =
their latest compression software. Because of that, we decided to stick =
with our "ancient" version (1.2.1) of the compressor, and not upgrade to =
the latest version, even though it will mean that at least one PC in our =
shop cannot be upgraded to the XP operating system.

Just this week, we were shocked to discover that they have also removed =
their free viewer (version 2.0) from their download site. This was one =
of the early viewers, and while we have "tested" several newer versions, =
we always went back to this one because it was so simple and easy to use =
- even for non-computer folks. The only other viewer out there (that we =
found), is actually NOT FREE. You can download a trial version, but the =
full version is $299! I haven't noticed a time-out feature in the =
viewer documentation, so I am assuming that most of the capabilities are =
turned off. This new viewer (GeoExpress View) is okay, but it's much =
more complicated for the casual user. =20

In our view, these are nearly extortionist schemes, since they control =
the bulk of the market in image compression.=20

We were wondering if anyone else out there has a problem with these =
practices, and what, if anything you plan to do about it. Will you move =
to the new GeoJP2 or something else? =20

Thanks for your opinions!
