Subject: RE: [gislist] Seeking Opinions on Lizardtech's MrSID

From:  Richard Nicoll

Hi Korine,

I have always preferred ER Mapper's ECW (enhanced compression wavelet)
technology. It performs very similarly to MrSID (in that it is a lossy
wavelet compression), with the advantages that the ECW viewer is free,
and most common GI packages either have ECW support built-in or a
plug-in is freely downloadable. www.ermapper.com

If you are using intranet thin-clients (such as ArcIMS) then they also
have a great package to speed up the transfer of ECW's (Image Server?)
which is great for streaming imagery.

Of course, as the wavelet compression is lossy neither MrSID or ECW
should be used for grid data, but for imagery the compression ratio is
great. Have a look at www.earthetc.com for some examples, they used to
have an 80gb ikonos of california - v impressive!

Subject: [gislist] Seeking Opinions on Lizardtech's MrSID

Hello List!

Several months back, we were greatly disappointed to learn of
Lizardtech's decision to move to a "data cartridge" pricing plan on
their latest compression software. Because of that, we decided to stick
with our "ancient" version (1.2.1) of the compressor, and not upgrade to
the latest version, even though it will mean that at least one PC in our
shop cannot be upgraded to the XP operating system.

Just this week, we were shocked to discover that they have also removed
their free viewer (version 2.0) from their download site. This was one
of the early viewers, and while we have "tested" several newer versions,
we always went back to this one because it was so simple and easy to use
- even for non-computer folks. The only other viewer out there (that we
found), is actually NOT FREE. You can download a trial version, but the
full version is $299! I haven't noticed a time-out feature in the
viewer documentation, so I am assuming that most of the capabilities are
turned off. This new viewer (GeoExpress View) is okay, but it's much
more complicated for the casual user.

In our view, these are nearly extortionist schemes, since they control
the bulk of the market in image compression.

We were wondering if anyone else out there has a problem with these
practices, and what, if anything you plan to do about it. Will you move
to the new GeoJP2 or something else?

Thanks for your opinions!
