Dear Listers,
We have been working on an internal project that involves a playing a lot of mental "twister". The issues revolve around metadata and how to capture it [metadata] automatically. More specifically, we are looking at building an application that we could "point" at a given file [shapefile, dgn, dxf, etc.] and have the file's metadata automatically read into a master metadata table [which is temporal and session-oriented only]. Those fields in the file's metadata that are null or blank, would be null or blank in our target application's metadata file as well. We are trying to come to grips with two things and find: a) a universal metadata reader, and b) not requiring the 'owner' of the file we are trying to read metadata for to enter it more than once. Is there any such existing tool, or anything that gets 80% of the way there ? I can hear the OGC crowd snickering at me already, and that's fine, we'll take whatever may be useful at this point. The last thing we want to do is to force users to enter metadata for each file in the system, each time they use the system, but we also understand that a majority of spatial data has very limited intrinsic metadata that can be "read" automatically. For example, in ArcCatalog, I can view metadata, but unless someone has manually entered it (and maintained it over time), knowing the file name, the coordinate system and projection is almost useless. Thanks in advance.
Best Regards, Anthony
