Subject: RE: [gislist] GIS Development in Environmental Control e.g. Mining, Occupational etc.
Date:  11/14/2003 04:20:00 AM
From:  Richard Nicoll

Tobie,

Whilst specific "customised" GIS applications do exist for some of these sp=
ecialist areas, in general a generic GIS package is used, as one of the str=
engths of GIS is its flexibility of application. Instead of looking for sp=
ecialist GIS software to suit your disciplines, I would suggest doing some =
research - there are many books specifically aimed at how best to apply GIS=
to these areas - try a search on Amazon for ("gis" + "environment") or sim=
ilar. These can provide some ideas of how a GIS package can be applied. U=
sing your VB skills you could then take this further. In addition, there a=
re a wealth of algorithms available for specific processes, usually provide=
d by the academic community.

We are an environmental consultancy, we apply GIS to solve numerous problem=
s such as legislation compliance. This includes pollution prevention, air =
quality, noise prediction, biodiversity surveys, etc. In our organisation,=
it is the discipline experts who use the GIS for their research, ie air qu=
ality experts use GIS for air quality purposes. I then sit within a specif=
ic team of pure GIS "experts" providing both advice and support to these gu=
ys, and bringing all their data together to see the 'big' picture and (perh=
aps) derive an answer.

I am sure you will agree after some research that GIS is indeed not just "u=
sed" within these fields, in many cases is it applied right at the centre o=
f their work.

I wish you all the best!

Hi,

I have a query in need to put to the list. I'm involved in GIS/Visual Basic=
programming for a GPS Satellite Vehicle Tracking Company. My real experien=
ce and knowledge is ventilation/environmental control/occupational hygiene =
in underground mining and mineral processing. I'm also qualified in noise -=
and air pollution control and radiation protection. My question is : Are t=
here anybody working on applications that cover these aspects, all or any c=
ombination of them? Are there existing applications that one can apply in t=
hese fields. I'm asking as I am getting experience in GIS and want to devel=
op my abilities with it. I have looked at ways to apply my fields of knowle=
dge to GIS - or is it visa-versa? Where can I find resources covering these=
aspects? Any comments?

Regards
Tobie
