The way Ashley Simmonds described, i.e. using the correlation between t= he time of each picture being taken and the time from GPS log, there were captu= red on video all statal roads in our country (with each picture in video being linke= d to the official XY coordinates and to a relative position along the official road centerlines), which can now be "virtualy" drived by clicking on a GIS layer. If the roads are not significantly changed from the time this video dat= a were last time updated and most things do not change so fast, the need (and expenses related) to actually go there are significatly reduced.

yeah, i remember having a similar idea to this some time ago for video purposes.
all you really need is a data logger which will record your NMEA senten= ces, then it should be a fairly straightforward task to correlate a position= and altitude based on the time of the photograph.
depending whether you're on the move, you could also get a fairly good heading.
all the photos in my database have a field whereby you can enter this d= ata (as we don't log GPS data like this yet), and i figger that when most o= f the photos have a position and heading entered, i should have a fairly good=
basis for viewing stuff that was never specifically photographed. eg, point to a position on a map (or select a location), and a couple queries cou= ld find out whether there was ever a photograph taken near that position looking toward it. cool huh?

Another option is to use just about any digital camera and any gps unit= , then use
Photo Studio, a free program to link the two together. http://www.stuffware.co.uk/photostudio/
Photo Studio relates the time stored with the image to the time gathere= d from a GPS track. (Make certain that you set the clock on the camera to= the time on the GPS unit.) Photo Studio then updates the metadata associate= d with your photo to include the lat/lon data.
Use G7ToWin, also a free program from: http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/ to download the track from your GPS.
As mentioned earlier, GPS PhotoLink, a $229 program, shows track or way= pts in Arcview and then shows photo thumbnails on cursor hover and a link t= o html.
