Subject: RE: [gislist] Mapping Programs
Date:  11/24/2003 09:00:03 AM
From:  Gary Andersen

We use AutoDesk Map 2004, ArcView 8.3 and a Trimble Unit for tracking
and ground-truthing. Map and ArcView work very well together. Map can
import and export shapefiles(ArcView) along with the metadata. Each
application has its strong points. Both work with databases. I would not
like to be without either of them.

The Trimble has its own software, of course. We download, upload, and
convert data from the Trimble unit into usable shapefiles for ArcMap.
These files, in turn, can be imported into Map and vice versa.

If you are mapping and using CAD I strongly recommend AutoDesk Map to
work with the ArcView Suite. The import/export features work seamlessly
with ArcView. In addition, Map (AutoCAD) has much more versatility when
it comes to creating and editing line work. ArcMap editing simply does
not have the power CAD does in this regard. However, we generally do our
final exhibits in ArcMap.

Subject: [gislist] Mapping Programs

My work for a municipality with a population of about
11,000 people. We have Underground Electric, Natural
Gas, and Water Distribution lines in our system. We
presently are using AutoCAD 14 to make our maps. We
are wanting to look into using GPS, etc... to better make
our mapping more accurate.Have been told about hand
held units from Trimble for the data collection, and also
programs such as ERSI as software. We would like more
information about these programs?=20
Thank you in advance.
