There are lots of brands of software and hardware. You should evaluate = features vs. cost for yourselves. I would suggest however that you = consider using survey grade GPS equipment rather than handheld units for = such a complicated maze of underground utilities. In our own testing, = we discovered that we had valves sometimes within two or three feet of = one-another, especially around ring connections. The Trimble ProXRS = sub-meter unit was good enough for MOST situations but was not reliably = accurate enough when the features appeared in tight patterns. We chose = to map our system using the Trimble 5700 survey grade equipment. We set = up two base stations, one atop a municipal airport control tower and = another atop a library building, and from there we can cover a large = part of the city with the rover units. Our survey crews also use = traditional survey equipment to run a traverse into covered places where = they can't receive a GPS signal. Of course, back here in the office, = our GIS technicians use the engineering (as-built???) drawings as a = guide to connect-the-dots and key-in more attributes. We're only doing = water and sanitary sewer so I can only imagine how much more complicated = the maze gets when you add electric and natural gas. It costs quite a = bit more than using hand-helds but the value of the data is worth it. = We've collected over 40,000 points out of an estimated 80,000 and mapped = 2500 miles out of our 5000 miles of pipe thus far (18 months) using this = system and it is going quite well.

My work for a municipality with a population of about 11,000 people. We have Underground Electric, Natural Gas, and Water Distribution lines in our system. We presently are using Autocad 14 to make our maps. We are wanting to look into using GPS, etc... to better make our mapping more accurate.Have been told about hand held units from Trimble for the data collection, and also programs such as ERSI as software. We would like more information about these programs?=20 Thank you in advance.
