Subject: RE: [gislist] Indian GIS usage

From:  Mike

That is an interesting choice of words: "brining GIS to the masses." Maybe
these folks should look at developing markets and products instead of
building "socialist utopias."

There is small group of smart people I know who continue to make loads of
money for over six years now harping on this very issue :: how to carry GIS
to Indian masses. Over this time, they have also built a brand for
themselves as campaigners for this cause. At their last annual jamboree they
even handed down an award to a large company whose GIS products (or
productizing services) outsiders are yet to see.

Seven years later every map you make or sell requires a DOD stamp. The
imagery you buy comes with "sensitive areas" blackened out (so you can
easily pinpoint sensitive areas). With the GPS you buy you need to "buy" an
import license (nobody makes it here: forget the claims).

Last year we shared these views with an extremely spirited journalist who
made sizeable noise before snoozing off.

Room for more noise. While we remain where we are.

Perhaps spirited listers with the needed time & effort can lobby with GOI.
And inform us after you have succeeded. We'll partcipate in the business
that follows.
