Subject: [gislist] Mapping sea bottom
Date:  01/06/2004 01:25:00 AM
From:  Vassil Vassilev

Dear all,
I was asked for a solution for mapping the sea bottom. The task is the
following:
I will prepare a detailed 1:25 000 DEM of the sea bottom from the topomaps.
The idea is to put this DEM into GPS (with high accuracy) or other device in
order the people who will go to dive and map underwater ecosystems to know
exactly where they are, what is the depth on this place and to be able to
store coordinates for later making some interpolations and analysis.
I propose to create a route in the lab for the desired points where samples
should be taken, then to load this route in the GPS and to navigate to the
desired points in the field (in this case water fields), but this is not a
good enough solution for the guys. They want to see where exactly they are
when they are in the sea and to choose where to dive based on the DEM which
I have prepared for them.
To tell you the truth this is my first attempts in this area - until now I
worked only on the land and I will highly appreciate any suggestions.
I will need also the approximate price of the GPS receivers which will do
the job. Untill now I used only GPS Garmin 12 CX and Magellan 2000, but they
will not be appropriate in this task (at least I think so).

Thank you in advance,

Vassil Vassilev
