Subject: RE: [gislist] Shadows on IKONOS images
Date:  01/06/2004 05:05:01 AM
From:  Richard Nicoll

Hi Vassil

I have had this exact problem in the past, but with cloud shadows
instead.

In most image processing packages it is possible to define a polygon
around your shadowed area and then apply a spectral enhancement to just
this area, keeping the surrounding pixels at the original values. I
used ER Mapper which enables an erv (vector) layer to be added into the
raster, you can then define processing to apply to just this extent.
Basically, applying the enhancement to just the defined area prevents
the rest of image turning white.

Note that because IKONOS only captures images in the visible spectrum,
all you can do is enhance what little reflectance has been captured.
The less light which reaches your shadowed area the less effectively it
can be enhanced. It is rare though to not manage any improvement. Good
luck!

Rich

Subject: [gislist] Shadows on IKONOS images

Hi again to all,
Does any of you have experience with processing of IKONOS images and
especially dealing with shadowed areas on the image - increasing details

etc.
I have an image from December where the buildings make very long
shadowes.
As it is written in the info for IKONOS the 11-bit images provide much
more
possibilities to reveal the information hidden bellow the shadows.
If you want to share your experience or have any suggestions,
Thank you in advance,

Vassil Vassilev
